Einsendung von Vorschlägen
Ordnungen im Wandel
Wissenschaftliche Herausforderungen im Zeitalter globaler Wirklichkeiten
Versuch einer transdisziplinären Verständigung
Interdisziplinäre Nachwuchstagung
Transdis e.V.
18.–20.1.2007 — Berlin (Deutschland)

The Contentious Question of Culture(s) in Contemporary Societies
Interdisciplinary Conference
Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi
1.–3.3.2007 — Dehli (India)
The use of the word culture, and its often-unstated assumptions, has given rise to considerable theoretical controversy. What exactly do we mean when we talk of culture? Is it associated with language, ethnicity, religion, nationality, a civilization, a way of life or everyday social practices? Is it conceived as relatively unchanging, as something that is threatened by the impact with other ›cultures‹ or as a set of ideas and practices that is subject to historical and social change? How are these notions of culture affected by the changing forms of political, economic and military domination and the vicissitudes of the postcolonial world?

Globalization, Diversity and Education
International Conference
College of Education, Washington State University
1.–3.3.2007 — Spokane, WA (USA)
Diversity, a concept widely employed in conversations addressing education, is often not examined within contexts of economics, power, history, and culture. The conference will provide a forum for scholarly discussion of diversity grounded in relationships between peoples, and the economic and cultural landscapes in which they interact. We invite proposals for presentations that engage the themes of diversity and education within the contexts of globalization and diasporic movements of peoples, economies, cultures, and ideologies. We are especially interested in work that engages the topic of diversity while connecting the local with the global.

  • Multinational states or empires in which in principle there is no systematic discrimination between different nationalities or cultures, even if in practice there are clearly, or arguably, hegemonic nations or cultures.
  • Hierarchic states or empires, typically but not exclusively European colonial empires, in which a hegemonic nation, race or culture, is openly proclaimed and where there are explicit attempts to justify such hierarchies. This could include states or empires which recognise so-called domestic dependent nations.
